Taking a page from a learning tool used in many schools, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) at St. Joseph’s Parkwood Hospital are using SMART boards to help patients improve their cognitive and social communication skills.
“We are one of the first hospitals to use SMART boards to support our therapeutic work with adults,” says SLP Penny Welch-West. “We’re excited about this new concept and our energy is transmitting to patients.”
The SMART board’s sophisticated technical features are a boon to clinicians working with those who are visually impaired, hard of hearing or who find it challenging to focus. Patients’ orientation to date, time and place are coached through features such as web access to The Weather Network, and cognitive-communication skills such as organizing and word finding are improved through interactive puzzles and other skill building features. Social skills are reinforced when patients take turns giving answers and respect the input of other patients and facilitators.
“The SMART board is a dynamic tool that brings an element of play to therapy,” says SLP Anna Maria Koo. “Patients are enjoying the interactive, instant feedback.”

Advanced Education would like to congratulate its partner SMART Technologies on the installation of its two millionth SMART Board interactive whiteboard. To mark the milestone, SMART donated the two millionth interactive whiteboard to Douglas Harkness School (DHS) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the city where SMART was founded in 1987 and remains headquartered.
2011 is a special year for SMART in that it marks the 20th anniversary of the sale of the world’s first interactive whiteboard, and SMART recently recorded the five millionth registered user of version 10 of its SMART Notebook™ collaborative learning software. Advanced Education is proud to be Ontario’s leading provider of SMART Board interactive whiteboards and other classroom technology.
Teacher Lexie Paterson and her grade 5 and 6 students at Douglas Harkness School in Calgary, Alberta get hands on learning with their new SMART Board(TM) interactive whiteboard. Throughout May, the Advanced Education team travelled across Ontario hosting the Spring Education Discovery Series which featured the latest classroom solutions from leading manufacturers such as SMART Technologies. Attendees had a chance to listen to a workshop by our Education Consultants on how to “demystify” and simplify lessons on the SMART Board. The hands-on portion of the session allowed the attendees to walk around and learn more about the different classroom technologies.
In addition, we also hosted the Assistive Technology Summit, a special needs workshop featuring classroom solutions for special education. This year, we welcomed a special guest speaker Randy Welch from Spaulding Youth Centre in New Hampshire, who explained how interactive whiteboards have revolutionized how teachers engage and teach autistic students in group instruction.
We would like to thank all of those who attended. We were overwhelmed with the response and thank everyone for taking the time out of your schedules to join us.
We would like to announce the winners of our draw. Each attendee had a chance to win a SMART™ Board interactive whiteboard, SMART™ Response System, or a SMART™ Document Camera.
The winners are:
SMART Board Interactive Whiteboard – Joseph Cordi
SMART Response – Terri Corneil
SMART Document Camera – Carmel Preya
Congratulations to all our winners!
Please feel to contact us at 1-800-436-6239 or send an e-mail to email@example.com and we will assist you with an audiovisual solution that suits your classroom needs.
